At first for me this was about mixing media for the most part. The photography was taken to improve skills in that area, and used to improve skills in this one. The images can represent anything from dreams and fantasies to emotions and infirmities. My goal was not to send a specific message but many messages that will be different for each viewer. Hopefully you are all busily working on your final projects.
Critique is Wednesday, December 17th at 6:30 pm.
Make sure you have a folder (called your name) in the Final Projects Folder (in the Drop Box), and have all your final pieces in that folder and ready to go for crit.
Also, make sure your folders on the T-drive are organized, with all of your work from the semester in them. Any revisions should also be in this folder with the word 'revision' in the file name.
For Final Critique, some of you may opt to print your work instead of project it. For instance, Frank, you may want to print your labels on sticky paper and apply them to bottles for the final effect. A couple of you have mentioned that you would like to print work for a portfolio.
If this is the case, I will come in on Monday the 15th, and help you out. EMAIL me before the weekend and we can set something up.

Here is my Art History project. I chose to impersonate the photos of Edward Weston, one of the great photographers of this country. He was one of the guys out West with Ansel Adams shooting landscapes. A portion of his body of work was nudes. I had a friend Nichole model for these shots. After the shoots, the exposures were converted to grayscale, tweaked (levels, contrast/brightness, and curves) and then altered (burning/dodging, tattoo removal, taking away some distracting background elements) until I was satisfied. I will post the three originals first and then my impressions.

For this project i tried very hard to stay away from clique topics, and obvious ones. I went threw 7 images before i finally liked three of them. So they go in order from top to bottom.

A Consumer Without a Face
In a capitalistic society, i feel that the consumer begins to loose there identity by conforming to popular trends in fashion. This image is from a magazine dating back to the early 60's. I first rendered the image and took out any unwanted dust from the image and cleared it up. then i proceeded to take the clothing and wrap it around the consumers face. It took awhile to wrap it so that you could still see the texture of the ladies cheek bone.

Who Really Is the Terrorist
After watching the war and peace report one late night, i was stunned by the images of corruption of our own government. In the report an intelligence official released disclosed information to the public about the death of two European reporters. It was announced that it was done because of false intelligence, but later reports now say that military officials knew that the hotel was occupied by reporters and still called it a "terrorist threat". Why must so many people die in the name of peace, and terror. Why must such a great country spoil its name in the heat of war. This is a tribute to all falsely accused of terrorism and my god bless their souls.

A friend and i where talking the other day and she urged me to check out this summer abroad program in Vietnam, that worked with children with mutations from agent orange. I have heard in passing about this but never took the time to read into it. After reading for a few hours i was inspired and made this image. This is an image of a victim of agent orange. Images such as this one are hidden away from the public. There was approximately 21 millions gallons of agent orange dumped in Vietnam during the years of 1962-1971. The toxic chemical has caused many birth defects in American troops. And because is has seeped into the Vietnamese water supply and has been causing mutations among new born. The image i have shown is nothing compared to some of the others.

I have never seen anyone walk away from a protest feeling any sense of resolution. However it is necessary to acknowledge the importance of standing up to a War machine that would rather roll over you than listen to your ideas. Unfortunately when ideologies clash, intellectual restraint dissolves and madness ensues. These are three images from an Iraq war protest of some years ago. That these images were taken so long ago, and that the problem still remains is sickening. My friends are still in the streets, and the War still remains. Regardless of the resolution, there is quite a statement to be made for it all.

Pollution, Puppy Mills, Poverty...

For my assignment, I chose to do pollution and puppy mills. In the pollution picture, I took a serene desert photo with a blue sky, then found a picture of a dreary, looming sky, and made the desert a bit more gloomy. I added some trash to illustrate how people pollute and dump over the environment. Afterwards, I created a smog that sort of blocks the sunlight from the landscape.

In the puppy mill picture, I drew a puppy, then created a haphazardly put together cage. I wanted to formulate a trapped and helpless feeling, since animal cruelty is so barbaric and if more people knew of the kinds of things that went on, they'd be disgusted.

Here are my pieces for the Make A Statement assignment.

The first is a piece about cannabis. When I found out that the piece did not have to be a political statement, just something we felt strongly about, I chose to switch gears from a legalization argument to my feelings about it. The phrase earth and sky speaks as to the way cannabis has two distinct sides to it: the physical and the spiritual. It has power in both worlds, the realm of the earth and the elevated realm of the sky. Much like how the Native Americans perceived tobacco smoke, we can watch the smoke from a bowl traveling into the sky, joining the other spirits there. Artistically, I wanted to do something I hadn't done before. The intent was to do some nice clean design work with plenty of negative space and an interesting color scheme.

The second piece is in regards to this election. I chose to take masks of Obama and McCain and reference the Masks of Comedy and Tragedy. This whole thing has been one incredibly grandiose theatrical performance and the curtain is about to fall. You'll notice that there is no frowning mask. The audience will be the tragedy, but when they are they will not be on the stage. They'll be walking the streets, droning away at the day.

The third piece depicts a zombie in a business suit. I think conceptually the image speaks for itself. I tried following a tutorial for this one. It was very indepth and the guy's end result was amazing. However, it was a video tutorial in french, so I had to just watch and try to follow a long with no words (not to mention his photoshop was in french as well). It didn't work out that well. If I were to try this tutorial again I would pick a better starting image, one with a higher resolution and more detain in the facial region. The one I started with was a little bit blown out in the face and didn't have good texture like you would want in something like this. Anyway, and interesting try, but not completely sucessful.

Rebellious Propaganda (updated)

"Speak & Rebel" is a parody of a childhood learning toy that I had called "Speak & Spell". "Raise Your Fist and Resist" are Rage Against the Machine Lyrics". Their music is fueled with strong political messages that I've always identified with. The graphic of the person holding a fist in the air is a modified version of their album cover,"The Battle of Los Angeles". I liked the idea of combining childhood paraphenalia with strong ideas of rebellion as the youth are primarily responsible for our future.

This piece uses an old magazine cover which depicts the "Pyramid of the Capitalist Scheme". My goal was to point out that many of us are blind to the controls of capitalism, politics, and religion. It seems as though many of us forget the roots of our society even though they govern our everyday actions as a nation.

For this piece I dug out my old Legos to portray an idea of rebellion and non-conformity. The title for this is, "One Day As A Lego Lion". Once again, the idea derives from Rage Against the Machine frontman, Zach De La Rocha. He started a side project titled, "One Day As A Lion" which comes from and 1970's George Rodriguez photo with a caption, "It's better to live one day as a lion than a thousand years as a lamb."

Children Rights

I chose to make my statement on children's rights because I feel it's a big issue all over the world. The first piece I did illustrated child soldiers. I tried to make them look as miserable and sad as possible and I made the background bloody red to illustrate blood and death. For the second idea on children rights I decided to illustrate child prostitution and showed the children as lonely and clueless as possible. I put the hand in their to illustrate praying to get out of the horrific situation. Lastly, for the third illustration I used a couple of images to show abuse and neglect that some children have to deal with everyday. This is an issue that I really feel stronly about and children do not get the right's that they should.

Electronica Tribute

The inspiration for this piece came from the music that constantly beats in my head. This collage is composed of numerous images that relate to some of my favorite electronica artists. They are: M.I.A., Justice, and Chromeo.

The burning man scuplture has an almost omnious shape and I would venture to say that M.I.A. is definitely one of the "heads" of this genre. The background synthizer is an early model Yamaha that most definitely helped shape electronic music. Although the cross gives you religious undertones, it actually is based off of Justice's concept album, Cross.

The robotic ambience of the piece represents the sound of these artists while the globes represent the beats. Plus, I just liked the way they all came together. My aim was to incorporate many different elements into this collage but I really liked the way these initally appeared and decided not to mess with them too much.

To be honest, clip art and the randomness of it really have never clicked for me. Art to me seems like something a 3 year old couldn't do. Many things I've seen its a copy paste sort of deal and people arrange it and call it art. I wasn't excited at all to do anything with copy and pasting until i decided to kick it up like 20 notches.

This tropical sunset is a culmination of about 30-40 different images, with each layer having its hue, levels, color adjusted with each one also having different filters, and many different dodge and burn techniques.

They sky alone is of 10 different pictures i blended together. Many things stand out but i wanted it to seem surreal, and intriguing. I could have kept going but i felt it was pretty finished because it just seems to click for me. Although it may not be perfect i think its different and shows how much work i put into it

Lively Desert

This is a combination of two different desert pictures with a picture of a stream incorporated into it. I added all of the other plants and such into it to give it a lively feel. The sunflower in the sky represents the sun. When I made this I was just thinking I'd recreate a desert by putting different pictures together to form a realistic desert, but then thought what the heck, and added some nice potted cacti, some cattails by the stream, and a desaturated cactus to kind of mask the harsh transition between the two different skies. The sunflower kind of creeps me out, because the way that the light hits it it looks so out of place in the sky, and looks as if it's descending down upon the group of little cacti.

Stawberry Fields Forever

When doing this project, I didn't really know what I wanted to do and it took me a while to decide. I decided to do a collage/tribute to John Lennon, a legend. In doing my project I played around a lot with the blending and eraser tool so it all went well together. I am a huge Beatle fan so this piece was a lot of fun. First I used the sun to represent "Here comes the sun." I wanted the background to be sepia color and the objects to be in color. I took "strawberry fields" and made it part of John Lennon's body. That part was the most difficult because I had to put the opacity down most of the way and outline his body so strawberrys were only on his body, and then I made the opacity higher so it took like the stawberrys were included in his body image. I used the memorial in Central Park to illustrate the rememberance of such an amazing hero.

For this assignment I used some of my old B&W 35mm negatives. The original shoot was about dreaming, and trying to capture some of the really bizarre situations that only the subconscious can create.
I was having a hard time coming up with an idea for this project, so I kind of just scanned my negatives and improved from there. This is the end result and I'm pretty happy with it. The coloring was done using layer blending styles and masking. While it wasn't the most challenge piece I've done, I still feel the end result is good.

HDR Imaging

Here's a really in depth look at High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography. HDR uses bracketed exposures of the same image (you'll need a sturdy tripod and might even want a cable release) to create an image with tremendous detail in shadows, midranges and highlights. They're pretty facinating and can look really great.

For assignment 3 I just played around with different tutorials in the bookmarks. The first one is just a shot I took of a bird a while ago, that I gave a "night vision" look.The second photograph was one I took of a lighthouse in Maine that I gave a fog effect.

The last picture is a mosaic I made up of my dog out of the same picture, and another picture of my cat.

Ok My first one was a sketch of my Dog, I used the tutotorial to a tee... I think I could have done it better

These two peices are from the Watercolor portrait tutorial, the upper one follows the tutorial exactly while the bottom one I added a water color filter to make it that much more a Water color. I can't choose which I like better. It doesn't help that I can't find a more dignified picture of my boyfriend. (the only other one I have is him sticking his tounge out....)
This comic one was started as an anniversery gift but I didn't like the way It came out so it was bumped to a Project. I did something wrong because what was supposed to look like a Comic panel looks like I put halftones over a picture. I swear its not that way

Goggle Glam

I played with numerous effects but really liked the reflection effect results the best. I decided to stick to the snowboard goggle theme and took it in various directions. This was one of my first ideas: to have a background that did not quite match the reflection of the goggle. The background is off a subway platform in New York and the reflection is of Mount Mansfield.

I originally created numerous photos of myself and others with their goggle lenses replaced with different and even comical imagery. I then decided that I really liked the image of the goggle lense by itself and the next photos stem from that.

For this one, I used numerous photo filters to replicate the relfective tints of snowboarding goggles. I took assorted photos of myself snowboarding and used the Spherize filter and the gradient tool in an attemopt to duplicate a relaistic goggle reflection. I then took another image of myself, added it to the background, and healvily pixelated it using the Color Halftone filter.

This next image is along the same lines but the background was heavily altered to the point where it almost resembles a metallic landscape.

The Face of the Nations

This is my second project; my flag. I knew from the start of this project that I wanted to do something that involved the flags of different nations of the world. I didn't like the first idea or two, because they didn't seem to carry much symbolism with them, or seemed more silly than I would have liked them to be.
Then I decided to make a face out of the countries' flags, representing kind of a "face of the world." I liked the idea a lot more than the previous ones. I ended up combining a variety of different flags (well over 50.), sometimes putting some together to form a pattern (like the ones around the eyes, the top being the Papau's flag and the bottom being Japan's flag). Since it was difficult to create shadow or contrast with the flags, since they were all fairly colorful or contained more than one color within them, I decided to dodge and burn the face afterwards to create more of a dimensional face. I decided to leave the background white to make it simplistic, as well as emphasize the flag-face.

This image began as a quick pencil sketch and was then scanned in and modified, but it still remains fairly true to its original form. The message I hoped to achieve is that though there are many problems facing the global community it is not impossible to resolve them. The result may not be perfect, there will always be scars of conflicts past, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

While conjuring up an idea for my flag i stumbled upon many ideas that led me away from actually creating a symbolic flag but rather a Photo shopped piece of art. I felt that the only thing that i am garenteed to see every day is the sun, weather its masked behind some gray clouds or its shining ever so brightly through my land rovers windows. So i decided to depict an image of the relationship between the earth and the sun. I used very bright colors that are seen in every flag arround the world to symbolize bolth the intesity of the sun and unity. hope you enjoy, and if not then well that sucks.

I wanted to create a flag that symbolized unity and harmony. I feel like those are the some of the best qualities for humanity to rally under. I liked the imagery of the balanced river stones and wanted to incorporate them with natural beauty that I feel most humans can relate to.

My goal for completing the assignment was to create a flag in which I feel represents the world as a whole connected nation. I used a bee and a flower as a symbol of fertility and bringing the life together. I chose these two objects to initially represent the world coming together in peace and harmony. I then included the world and people of all ethnicity holding hands to interpret the connection.

In my flag worshiping experience, I have always found that color and shape are of utmost importance when representing a group of people or a nation, or in this case the world. Here are some ideas of the color symbolism I used on my flag...

Red: love, confidence, passion
Yellow: energy, wisdom, happiness
Black: death, stability, night
White: purity, hope, light
Earth: green life and blue peace

As represented with the human hand, love is the grip that unites everyone and is essential (and central) to this world.

The "eye" sees both sides of every opposition: day and night, truth and evil, life and death.

The Vermont Studio Center (VSC) and the Rubin Museum of Art (RMA) of New York are pleased to present, Written on the Wind: The Flag Project, an exhibition of contemporary art and design that links the traditional and the contemporary, community and museum, artist and audience (on view from September 19, 2008 through October 16, 2008 at VSC’s Red Mill Gallery).

More than 100 contemporary artists have designed flags for this exhibit. Although we can't visit the Studio Center during class time, I would strongly encourage you to check this exhibit out.

My mission for this piece was to create a flag that is relevant to the entire world. A pretty lofty task. I settled on a theme intending to demonstrate the innate connections between seemingly opposing powers. This piece relies on simplicity as opposed to trying to make it photo realistic. Details are a breeding ground for arguments and resentment, but when issues are broken down to their simplest form we begin to find common ground. We as a species all have the same goals. I chose three symbols that are universal to humans all over the world: The Sun, The Roots and The Tree.

Bringing light to simple objects

When receiving this assignment, I had no idea what items I was going to scan. I went in my apartment and found the simplest items I could find, to see if i could put beauty into its simplicity. I tried to brighten the shells and tweak the color a little bit to bring life to the object. The matches on the other hand I had trouble trying to make them different then it was originally. I cloned the only match left and cloned it many times so it doubled and made it look like a full box of matches. I tried to connect Buddha with the matches, by attaching a copied pipe to Buddha's mouth. However, when done scanning I realized that Buddha, the matches, and the shells I didn't really have a complete theme, but I was able to learn techniques that will be useful later on.

This Is Your Vice

As a resident of the Old North End of Burlington, I am faced with the vices of others on a daily basis. From finding used hypodermic needles in my yard to the news of murder and rape on my street, I am in constant awe and terror of the behaviors of my neighbors. I titled my three pieces "This Is Your Vice" after the addictions that these items represent; drugs, sex, gambling, and violence.

The three pieces represent the cycle that the vices might take. The first one represents the vices in a package, the second represents the usage, and the third represents the remains or waste from the vices.

I scanned the items, touched them up, and rearranged them using Photoshop.
